WriterCoach Connection(TM) (WCC) focuses attention on the importance of writing for students, teachers and administrators and brings community support for writing into the public schools. The program trains and coordinates volunteer writing coaches who work with students individually in secondary-school English classes. With an attentive ear and guiding hand, coaches engage students in the writing process, reinforce teachers’ lessons, and challenge more proficient writers to dig deeper—encouraging all students to develop and express their own ideas.
Coaches give students the individual feedback teachers long to give but find impossible in large classes. Since all students in a class receive support, no stigma is attached to working with a coach. For students whose parents lack the time or the skills to help them at home, our coaches' consistent support and encouragement help to mitigate this inequality of family resources—a major cause of the achievement gap. |
Teachers using the program are inspired to collaborate on their writing curricula and to be organized, articulate, and prepared with their writing assignments. Coaches, sitting side by side with students and working one on one, develop a firm dedication to their students' progress and to the program itself.
Community Alliance for Learning
WCC is a program of the non-profit organization Community Alliance for Learning (CAFL). Inspired by early evidence of WriterCoach Connection’s extraordinary acceptance, a group of WCC coaches and parents founded Community Alliance for Learning in the summer of 2001 as a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation to sustain and grow the writer-coach program and bring support to public schools. CAFL’s tax I.D. is #91-2144555 and donations are tax-exempt.
