it was going to be so well-organized and effective. The training is very impressive."

                                        Coach Training

Before you begin to coach, we will prepare you to identify writers' strengths, to encourage their efforts, and to make specific, memorable suggestions for improvement. During coach training we share innovative methods for guiding young writers. We also encourage you in role-play exercises to help you develop consistent responses to students' needs.

                                        Prior to coaching you will:

                                        1. Complete a WCC training sequence—two three-hour workshops.
Fall trainings run from September to November, with spring sessions in January and February.
Choose your preferred training session, then register to volunteer.

                                        2. Observe experienced WCC coaches.
Before you begin coaching, schedule permitting, you will have an opportunity to observe an experienced WCC coach during a coaching session.

                                        3. Complete the requirements for volunteers in your school district.
                                        • Volunteers in Berkeley schools are required to complete the Berkeley School Volunteer (BSV) orientation.
                                        • Volunteers in Oakland schools must complete the WCC application form and provide evidence of a recent TB test showing negative results.
                                        • Volunteers in Albany schools must complete the WCC application form.
                                        • Volunteers in El Cerrito schools must be fingerprinted and provide evidence of a recent TB test showing negative results.

Information regarding these requirements will be provided when you register. Register for volunteer training now!
