Volunteers Wanted for 2009-2010 School Year

This is the most satisfying work I've done in the Berkeley schools.

WCC coach Phyllis Orrick

Enjoy the satisfaction of helping students develop important literacy skills by becoming a writing coach. WriterCoach Connection encourages parents, college students, working and retired people of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities to become volunteers. We are currently recruiting volunteers to become writing coaches for the 2009-10 academic year.

You do not need to be a writer or educator—you will be fully trained as a coach. No teaching, tutoring, or coaching experience is necessary. In addition to step-by-step training, WCC provides knowledgeable coordinators at each school and ongoing support for coaches. Becoming a coach takes just a few simple steps.

  1. Complete a WCC training—two 3-hour workshops.
  2. Commit to a regular, weekly 1-2 hour coaching shift during the school day.
  3. Berkeley coaches must register with Berkeley School Volunteers and complete a brief orientation (required by the Berkeley Unified School District).
  4. Albany coaches must complete the WCC application form.
  5. Oakland coaches must complete the WCC application form and provide negative TB test results (info on testing will be sent when you register).
